#FMFINTERVIEW: A Q&A WITH MIO
Mio are an excellent electronic dream pop duo from Adelaide, Australia. They’ve recently released a great single entitled “Neverland”. We had the chance to chat with Mio about Peter Pan, Video Games, and Grimes.
Your song ‘Neverland’ is inspired by J.M. Barrie’s ‘Peter Pan’. What is it about this story that compelled you to write this song?
When I wrote the music it was definitely around the themes of that story, and the feelings it invokes but I never told Sarah from Le Pie that. I wanted to give her the freedom to find her own connection to the song. I think part of collaborating is letting go and seeing what comes. It just so happened that we were on the same page and we hardly changed a thing lyrically from the initial demo she sent us back. One of those happy accidents.
We’re both gamers, Annie is into GTA V at the moment and I really like the Batman series. Who doesn’t want to be Batman? – I’m sure it all filters through into our music but the most conscious influence is definitely film. All of the music I’ve written for Mio has a film attached to it. Composing for a film is something I’d be very keen on trying one day.
What attracts you to Electronic music?
The freedom of being able to write anytime you feel like it. It’s also very insular at times and we are both introverts so it makes sense. We also share German heritage so I’m sure that’s part of it too. It just always agreed with all the right receptors.
We love your music video for ‘Back To You’. What can you tell us about the video that we might not know
Thank you. The concept was all Bryan Mason from Closer Productions and he’s kind of a genius so we were pretty lucky to have him work on it. Something you may not know is the two young girls in the clip are actually friends in the real world and one of them is Bryan’s daughter. Bryan has been teaching her to skate since she could walk so it was also this beautiful tribute from a Father to his Daughter. Super sweet.
Who is your musical muse and why?
Oh my… That’s really tough. I try to keep it as varied as possible because I tend to get obsessed with things and that’s not helpful when you’re writing. If I had to pick someone I’d go with Kevin Parker from Tame Impala. Their new record is still getting played regularly, it’s totally amazing. He is amazing. I’m amazed.
Have you had a chance to listen to Grimes ‘Art Angels’?
We were just listening to it the other day! I love that she’s taking her music into a new direction. I remember seeing her at The Great Escape in the UK in 2012 I think and I was blown away. I really like what she does. I also like that she’s outspoken about the shit she gets dealt because she’s a woman in this industry. That stuff really bothers us and it’s great to see people like her and also Lauren Mayberry from Chvrches speak out about it. Shit needs to change.
