20. L I M – RUSHING GUY
This entrancing visual explores gender through the slow morphing faces of male models and L I M’s own face. Simple conceptually yet executed exceedingly well. This is the face morphing effect MJ’s ‘Black or White’ wishes it had, for a fraction of the cost I’m sure
19. PHANTOGRAM – FUNERAL PYRE
“And here to your left, folks, you will see 2017, in all it’s demented, strange, and pre-apocalyptic glory.”
18. ARCA – REVERIE
One of a series of unforgettable visuals from Jesse Kanda, this one presents Arca as a matador and mechanical animal of sorts. There are some heavier themes at hand here, but I’m too tired, so I’ll let you work them out.
17. PERFUME GENIUS – SLIP AWAY
A second selection from director Andrew Thomas Huang, who described the visual as part inspired by Victoria portraiture and part Thelma And Louise. This beautiful and strange fairy tale tells the story of best friends portrayed by Perfume Genius (Mike Hadreas) and Teresa ‘Toogie’ Barcelo being pursued by some strange individuals.
16. BECK – UP ALL NIGHT
A modern alternate version of Joan Of Arc, a teenage girl must save the boy from a series of dangers at a house party in this subverted twist on the ‘damsel in distress’.
15. THE BLAZE – VIRILE
‘Virile’ yields a completely believable intimacy and camaraderie between two men. The chemistry on screen is truly palpable.
14. ALDOUS HARDING – BLEND
Drawing inspiration from a particularly sexually objectifying scene from Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Apocalypse Now’, the video for ‘Blend’ sees Harding engage the camera, and subsequently the audience, to impressive lengths.
13. RAE MORRIS – DO IT
This is the one. I watched this video more than any other. Was it the song? Was it the video? was it the marriage of both? Was it the completely believable friendship between the performers? Can I be their friend? Was it the seemingly candid camera and accidental moments caught on tape? Perhaps it was the singing dog? Who knows? I watched this a lot and I loved it more each time. Be right back, going to watch this again right now.
12. HUNDRED WATERS – FINGERS
One of the creepiest videos of the year, and the second from Hundred Waters, and third from Allie Avital, ‘Fingers’ features over 12,000 bugs let loose over Nicole Miglis, who I tip my hat to. I freak out over a single spider in my apartment. This is absolutely insane.
11. GRIZZLY BEAR – MOURNING SOUND
When I first was smitten with the musical stylings of Grizzly Bear with ‘Knife’, it was also with their tendencies towards eccentric music videos. ‘Mourning Sound’ sits comfortably among their weird videography in a highly indescribable way. Clearly there are themes of women’s liberation but also laser beams shot from nipples? Just watch it, k?
