30. KING KRULE – DUM SURFER

Are Zombies still hip? The Walking Dead definitely needs to go away.Β  In any case, Archie and co. seem to be afflicted with some form of zombie-like condition. Nevertheless, the show must go on!

29. HUNDRED WATERS – WAVE TO ANCHOR

It’s impossible for us to exclude the brilliance of Allie Avital in our year end lists. ‘Wave To Anchor’ is the first of three inclusions from the talented director in this year’s list. The contrasting visual pairs Miglis vibrant screen presence and upbeat dance choreography against the less exciting villages of Bulgaria.

28. BETTY WHO – SOME KINDA WONDERFUL

Yet another less compelling setting, a laundromat, brought to life with colour and dance in the video for Betty Who’s ‘Some Kind Wonderful’.

27. ST. VINCENT – NEW YORK

The first of three bold and brightly coloured visuals released by St. Vincent for her acclaimed ‘MASSEDUCTION’ album. It was very difficult to decide which I preferred of the three, so I defaulted to the first. That counts for something I think. IF not, sue me. But not really, I’m poor.

26. COM TRUISE – PROPAGATION

A cautionary tale which would be right at home in as an episode of Black Mirror, ‘Propagation’ warns us of the dangers of inviting tech into our homes to do our bidding. Get rid of those Amazon Echo’s now before it’s too late!

25. MOSES SUMNEY – LONELY WORLD

An intriguing visual with an unexpected twist from a series of impressive Avital directed videos released for Moses Sumney this year.

24. BJORK – THE GATE

No stranger to magnificent music videos, Bjork teams up with Andrew Thomas Huang to bring to life one of the most visually impressive fantasy worlds to ever grace the music video format. Truly an otherworldly experience.

23. SEVDALIZA – HEAR MY PAIN HEAL

A dark enigmatic visual that takes place in a seemingly bewitched house which defies additional description but demands viewing.

22. JOJI – WILL HE

The dark and disturbing video for ‘Will He’ invites us to bare witness to a scene of tragedy. Oh, and there’s a dude in a panda suit too.

21. SSION – COMEBACK

Easily one of the wildest and most memorable videos of the year. The self directed video kicks off with Cody Critcheloe in a bar smitten with it’s jukebox, and soon becomes something much more meta, taking us through various stages of the videos fictional production phases, including casting of someone to portray the video’s Critcheloe himself. There’s lots of dancing, peculiar visual effects, and Cody dressed as a cow.
